This precludes a user from specifying a datatype that is a union of simpletypes.  In many cases a user might wish to specify that the datatype is a union of the XSD datatypes.  (See for example ddms:CombinedDateType).  This element also precludes a user from specifying a pattern for the datatype. 

Suggest modifying drm:datatype to provide a mechanism to point to an XML Schema defining the datatype.  This will facilitate greater interoperability and greater flexibility for accurately reflecting datatypes within a DRM instance.  This could be done in addition to the current drm:datatype definition.
