Just some of my thoughts on what is a "profile" vs. an "architecture",
regardless of the discipline.    (01)

1. In general, a "profile" is a look across things (e.g., an
architecture) from a particular vantage point (e.g., a discipline,
namely geospatial in this case). (In fact, profile is a term used in
the geospatial community, as in elevation profile or terrain profile.)
My definition of an EA profile is: "An integrated representation of a
discipline's requirements, capabilities, and considerations across other
architecture perspectives".    (02)

2. For the FEA, the Geospatial Profile is really a specification or
guidance for how actual geospatial EA profiles should be created for
individual architectures (enterprise or multi-agency). It should define
how geospatial capabilities should be integral to the other perspectives
(e.g. performance, business, data, service/component, technical,
resource, security/privacy, records, etc.) as well as stand on its own.
This is, indeed, the approach the GeoCOP is taking.    (03)

3. I do think the idea of a National Geospatial EA is distinct from a
geospatial profile. I think we need both. An NGEA is harder to
establish than a Geospatial Profile.    (04)

3a. Repeating from #2, a specific geospatial EA profile is for a
certain agency or domain architecture.    (05)

3b. The National Geospatial EA would basically be akin to what OMB has
called a "line-of-business" architecture (rather than a profile), of
which there are about 6 right now: Human Resources, Grants, Financial
Management, Case Management, Federal Health, and IT Security.    (06)

Does this help?    (07)

ConferenceSession on NGEA    (09)

The NGEA term was in vogue in the Spring (as was UGEA for a time).
I'll use the simpler term "Geospatial Profile", and I'll change my last
bullet per Brenda's suggestion.    (010)

I think the last couple of points belong in an forum among folks who are
familiar with the terms FGDC, NSDI, GOS, and National Map. Most
attendees at the EA conference in which I am speaking would not.    (014)
