CALL FOR CHAPTERS    (01)

Submission Deadline: February 28, 2007
Semantic Web Engineering in the Knowledge Society    (02)

A book edited by Dr. Jorge Cardoso ( University of Madeira ) and Dr.
Miltiadis D. Lytras ( University of Patras )    (03)

Introduction    (04)

The current World Wide Web is syntactic and the content itself is only
readable by humans. The     (05)

semantic Web proposes the mark-up of content on the Web using formal
ontologies that structure     (06)

underlying data for the purpose of comprehensive and transportable machine
understanding. The     (07)

academia has been working on several solutions, applications and examples to
illustrate how     (08)

the use of semantics can greatly enhance the integration and
interoperability of information     (09)

systems. Nevertheless, many professionals in the industry consider that
there is a lack of     (010)

guiding principles that would enable them to deploy end-to-end solutions in
a straightforward     (011)

and effortlessly way. Having this requirement in mind, we invite authors to
submit contributions     (012)

that describe aspects and issues that have a considerable importance in the
development of     (013)

end-to-end solutions. Such contributions typically include work on Modeling
knowledge, Ontology     (014)

design methodologies, Ontology tools, Semantic annotation, and Inferencing
and reasoning.    (015)

The Overall Objective of the Book    (016)

The main objective of the book is to lay the foundations for understanding
the technologies     (017)

behind the semantic Web. Organizations are striving for literature that
guides them in the     (018)

development of end-to-end applications and systems that use semantics. While
the industry is     (019)

willing to use semantics, the academia has not yet shown how to
systematically employ semantic     (020)

Web technologies to deploy a new breed of systems. The book aims to provide
relevant theories,     (021)

tools, and methodologies to develop semantic applications. It is written for
students and     (022)

professionals who want to improve their understanding of how semantics and
ontologies can be used     (023)

inside organizations. It also aims at studying the application of semantics
to each of the steps in     (024)

the semantic applications lifecycle and how semantics can help address
critical issues in reuse,     (025)

integration, and interoperability.     (026)

The Target Audience    (027)

Undergraduate, graduate, and advanced graduate students enrolled in courses
covering the semantic     (028)

enterprise, the semantic Web, knowledge management and engineering, and
semantics in information    (029)

systems. The book is also suitable for professionals, academic, and industry
researchers    (030)

interested on emerging topics and hot areas.    (031)

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:    (032)

1. The Semantic Web    (033)

2. The Semantic Web Engineering Agenda    (034)

3. Modeling Knowledge    (035)

4. Expressing Knowledge    (036)

5. Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics    (037)

6. Ontology Design Methodologies    (038)

7. Ontology Languages    (039)

8. Ontology Tools    (040)

9. Semantic Annotation    (041)

10. Inferencing and reasoning    (042)

11. Industrial use of semantics: case studies    (043)

12. Knowledge Society and Semantics: case studies    (044)

13. Research on semantics: open fields    (045)

14. The future of the Semantic Web    (046)

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE    (047)

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before February
28, 2007, a 2-5 page    (048)

manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the
proposed chapter.    (049)

Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by March 15, 2007 about the
status of their    (050)

proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are
expected to be    (051)

submitted by June 15, 2007. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a
blind review basis.    (052)

The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group, Inc., www.idea-group.
com, publisher of the    (053)

Idea Group Publishing, Information Science Publishing, IRM Press, CyberTech
Publishing and    (054)

Idea Group Reference imprints.    (055)
