A metadata registry is a tool for managing shareable data - a comprehensive, authoritative source of reference information about data. It does not contain the actual data, rather it provides information on the definition, origin, source, and location of data. It supports the standard-setting process by recording and disseminating data standards, which facilitates data sharing among organizations and users. The registry provides links to supporting information about the metadata. When used in conjunction with an information database, the registry enables users to better understand the obtained information and makes the information more meaningful. Specified and standardized data enhances its usefulness and shareability.    (2XYL)
