Context Definition 1 (2W0O)
The broader use of this term outside of the OMB Enterprise Architecture Assessment Framework is the more generic definition associated with Porter's work on Value Chain Analysis (Porter, Michael E., Competitive Advantage: Creating and Sustaining Superior Performance, 1980). Value Chain: The set of activities an organization performs to create and distribute its goods and services, including direct activities, such as procurement and production, and indirect activities, such as human resources and finance (an organization is split into 'primary activities' and 'support activities.') Value chain analysis is a systematic approach to examining the development of competitive advantage which is achieved when an organization links the activities in its value chain more cheaply or more expertly than do its competitors. The chain consists of a series of activities that create and build value. They culminate in the total value delivered by an organization. The 'margin' depicted in Porter's value chain diagram is the same as added value. (2W0P)
