Resources and Tools for Workshop #43 - Designing the DRM for Data Accessibility: Building Sustainable Stewardship Practices Together (2U29)
Hands On Steps: (2UB4)
- (1) See The Semantic Interoperability Information Sharing Tool Kit Pilot Part 2 for excerpts from Shelley Powers, Practical RDF, Solving Problems with the Resource Description Framework, O’Reilly, 2003, and others as noted. Also see W3C RDF Primer (2UB5)
- (2) Optional: Go to Download the code examples for Practical RDF book and UNZIP. (2UB6)
- (3) See List of Practical RDF Examples and RDF Code. (2UB7)
- (4) Go to a favorite Web Page and copy the URL to paste in step (5). (2UB8)
- (5) Go to: DC DOT RDF Metadata Generator and enter your URL and generate metadata. Change the Display Format to RDF and select and copy the RDF to use in step (6). (2UB9)
- (6) Go to: W3C RDF Validator and clear the text area and paste the Dublin Core RDF Metadata into the open box and do Parse RDF (specify the Triples and Graph Display option). Examine the Validation Results, Triples, and Graph of the Data Model. (2UBA)
- (7) Go to: FOAF-a-Matic RDF Metadata Generator and create a FOAF file for yourself that will show your relationships to those in your breakout group for the Workshop. Test your FOAF file in the W3C RDF Validator (recall Step 6). Save the FOAF file and either host it on your Web server and post the URL to the Wiki or post the complete FOAF file on the Wiki under your FirstLast name Wiki page. Susan will demonstrate this. (2UBB)
- (8) Go to: Ralph Hodgson's FOAF File and do View Source to see RDF. Example of a FOAF file rendered through an XSLT script. Test his FOAF file in the W3C RDF Validator (recall Step 6). (2UBC)
- (9) Optional (Extra Credit): Go to DOAP: Description of a Project Using RDF/XML to see the extension of FOAF to describe open source projects. (2UBD)
- (10) Go to: MindSwap's Convert to RDF Tool and see the Readme file. Also go to Ontology for creating the mapping file to save and open this ontology file used in this tool. (2UBE)
- (11) Go to: Morten Fredriksen's RDF Schema viewer and use Example 6-7. PostCon RDF Schema and DOAP RDF Schema to explore the RDF Schemas. (2UBF)
- (12) Extra Credit: Go to Semantic Technologies Center and explore the resources. (2UBG)
- (13) Extra Credit: Go to Oracle Life Sciences Platform and explore the resources. (2UBH)
- (14) Extra Credit: Go to DOAPy Family Tools that will help you to create (DOAP-a-matic), view (DOAP Viewer) and publicize (DOAP Annuaire) DOAP documents (in process). (2UBN)

Critics (page 5) for responses to criticisms of the Semantic Web: "Now I use RDF and its all so simple – but if I hadn’t have had three years of XML hell, I wouldn’t ever have understood" and "A critical part, perhaps not obvious from the (SW) specs, is the way different communities of practice develop independently, bottom up, and then can connect link by link, like patches sewn together at the edges."
