Debbie Knorr currently leads the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Science Education (OSE) Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation Team. She is responsible for the management and oversight of numerous OSE programs and projects, including the OSE Web site, American Customers Satisfaction Index (ACSI) web survey, LifeWorks, and Science in the Cinema. She also assists the OSE Director in many science education policy-related activities. She is a member of the Trans-NIH K-12 and Community Outreach Committee. (3OGJ)
Ms. Knorr came to the NIH in 1981 where she worked in the Surgery Branch, National Cancer Institute (NCI), and was an integral member of the team conducting early clinical trials involving human Interleukin-2 (IL-2). In 1984 she moved to the Clinical Neurosurgery Branch, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), where she continued to be involved with IL-2 clinical trials. While at NINDS, she was also involved in basic research on cell-type-specific protein toxins as treatment strategies for brain tumors. (3OGK)
In 1992 Ms. Knorr assumed an administrative role in the NIH Office of Recombinant DNA Activites (ORDA) -- later renamed the Office of Biotechnology Activites (OBA) within the Office of Science Policy (OSP), Office of the Director (OD), NIH. While in ORDA, her duties included coordination of the public Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) review, approval and oversight of the first 350 human gene therapy clinical trials conducted in the U.S. and for administering the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant DNA Molecules (NIH Guidelines). In 1996 she was appointed Executive Secretary of the RAC and served as Acting Director, ORDA, for several years. Ms. Knorr came to OSE in 2000. She has been a co-author on over 20 scientific publications. (3OGL)
